George Kollias is a Biologist, Member of the Academy of Athens, Professor and Director of the Department of Physiology at the Medical School of the University of Athens and Research Professor at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center "Alexander Fleming".
Dr. Kollias has pioneered genetic approaches to study the function of cytokine signaling in animal models of human diseases, with specific focus on Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). His lab is renowned for proof of principle preclinical studies that led to the development of anti-TNF therapies for rheumatoid arthritis and for advancing knowledge on molecular and cellular mechanisms driving chronic inflammation and autoimmunity (e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Multiple Sclerosis). Dr. Kollias has published over 220 primary research articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 49 reviews and commentaries (>44.500 citations, h-index 96 Source: Google Scholar). His laboratory is supported by several competitive grants from national sources and the European Commission, and has been awarded twice (2014, 2022) the highly prestigious grants from the European Research Council (ERC).
Dr. Kollias’ efforts developed almost exclusively in Greece, and his scientific and administrative work has contributed decisively to the support of a new generation of Greek scientists and the development of National Infrastructures of scientific and technological excellence. Dr. Kollias coordinates the National Research Infrastructures Infrafrontier.GR/Phenotypos from BSRC Fleming, and pMedGR from the Medical School of Athens. He is President of the Scientific Committee at the Institute of New Biotechnologies & Precision Medicine at the Medical School of Athens. In 2006 he founded the first CRO-biotech spin-off of BSRC Fleming, Biomedcode Hellas SA, which offers innovative and unique models of human disease and provides preclinical drug evaluation services to large pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
Dr. Kollias is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO, 2000-). Chair of the ERC Starting grants (2010-2013) and ERC Advanced Grants (2020). Dr. Kollias served as the National Representative of Greece at ESFRI (2010-2012), member of the ESFRI strategic working group on Health and Food (2011-2022) and member of the Attica Regional Council on Research and Innovation (PSEK, 2017-2022). He was elected President and Director of the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” (2002-2010 & 2016-2020), President of the Council of the Directors of the Greek Research Centers (2009-2010) and member of the National Council on Research and Technology of the Ministry of Development (2001-2003 and 2005-2009). Since 2014, Dr. Kollias is Member of the Biosciences Steering Group of the European Academies Science Advisory Panel (EASAC). He was awarded the Carol-Nachman Award for Rheumatology (2014). Since 2016, he directs the International and Transinstitutional Graduate Program in "Molecular Biomedicine: Mechanisms of Disease, Molecular and Cellular therapies and Bioinnovation" at the Medical School of the University of Athens and the BSRC Fleming.
Ο Γιώργος Κόλλιας είναι Bιολόγος, τακτικό Μέλος της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, Καθηγητής και Διευθυντής του εργαστηρίου Πειραματικής Φυσιολογίας στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών και Συνεργαζόμενος Καθηγητής στο Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Βιοϊατρικών Επιστημών «Αλέξανδρος Φλέμιγκ».
Ο κ. Κόλλιας αναγνωρίζεται διεθνώς για πρωτοποριακές έρευνες που οδήγησαν στις πρώτες κλινικές δοκιμές και την ανάπτυξη των βιολογικών αντι-TNF θεραπειών για τη ρευματοειδή αρθρίτιδα. Το εργαστήριό του πρωτοπορεί στην ανάπτυξη γενετικών μεθόδων για την κατανόηση των μοριακών και κυτταρικών μηχανισμών που διέπουν τις χρόνιες, φλεγμονώδεις ανοσολογικές νόσους. Έχει δημοσιεύσει περισσότερα από 220 επιστημονικά άρθρα και 49 ανασκοπήσεις και σχολιασμούς (>44.500 αναφορές, h-index 96, Πηγή: Google Scholar). To εργαστήριό του υποστηρίζεται από Εθνικά και Ευρωπαϊκά ανταγωνιστικά προγράμματα, ενώ έχει βραβευτεί δύο φορές (2014, 2022) από το υψηλού κύρους ‘πρόγραμμα έμπειρων ερευνητών’ του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας (ERC).
Οι επιστημονικές εργασίες του κ. Κόλλια αναπτύχθηκαν σχεδόν αποκλειστικά στην Ελλάδα και το επιστημονικό και διοικητικό του έργο συνέβαλλε καθοριστικά στην ανάπτυξη νέας γενιάς Ελλήνων επιστημόνων και μεγάλων Εθνικών υποδομών επιστημονικής και τεχνολογικής αριστείας. Συντονίζει τις Εθνικές Ερευνητικές Υποδομές Infrafrontier.GR/Phenotypos για την προτυποποίηση ασθενειών του ανθρώπου από το Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Φλέμιγκ, και τεχνολογιών αιχμής για την Ιατρική Ακριβείας pMedGR από την Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Είναι Πρόεδρος της Επιστημονικής Επιτροπής του νεοσυσταθέντος Κέντρου Νέων Βιοτεχνολογιών και Ιατρικής Ακριβείας (ΚΕΝΕΒΙΑ) της Ιατρικής Σχολής του ίδιου Πανεπιστημίου. Το 2006, ίδρυσε την εξαγωγική επιχείρηση έντασης γνώσης - τεχνοβλαστό, την Biomedcode Ελλάς Α.Ε, η οποία προσφέρει καινοτόμα και μοναδικά μοντέλα ασθενειών του ανθρώπου και παρέχει υπηρεσίες προκλινικής αξιολόγησης φαρμάκων σε μεγάλες φαρμακευτικές εταιρείες παγκοσμίως.
Εκλεγμένο μέλος του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού Μοριακής Βιολογίας (EMBO, 2000-). Mέλος και πρόεδρος της επιτροπής αξιολόγησης των προγραμμάτων ERC Starting Grants (2010-2013) και ERC Advanced Grants (2020) στον Τομέα Ανοσολογίας και Μικροβιολογίας. Διετέλεσε Εθνικός Εκπρόσωπος στο European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI, 2010-2012), μέλος της Ομάδας Εργασίας Biomedical Sciences/Health and Food του ESFRI (2011-2022), και μέλος του Περιφερειακού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας Αττικής (ΠΣΕΚ, 2017-2022). Υπηρέτησε εκλεγείς ως Πρόεδρος και Επιστημονικός Διευθυντής του Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Βιοϊατρικών Επιστημών «Αλέξανδρος Φλέμιγκ» (2002-2010 & 2016-2020), Πρόεδρος της Συνόδου των Προέδρων των Ερευνητικών Κέντρων (2009-2010) και ως Τακτικό Μέλος του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας και Τεχνολογίας (2001-2003 και 2005-2009). Από το 2014 είναι μέλος της Συμβουλευτικής Επιτροπής για τις Βιοεπιστήμες του EASAC (European Academies Science Advisory Panel). Διεθνές βραβείο Carol-Nachman για πρωτοποριακές έρευνες στον τομέα της Ρευματολογίας (2014). Από το 2016 διευθύνει το Διεθνές Διϊδρυματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών στη ‘Μοριακή Βιοϊατρική: Μηχανισμοί Ασθενειών, Μοριακές και Κυτταρικές θεραπείες και Βιοκαινοτομία’ της Ιατρικής Σχολής Αθηνών και του Ε.ΚΕ.Β.Ε. «Αλέξανδρος Φλέμιγκ».
