Researchers at Fleming have now engineered a new model of the disease in mice that overproduce TNF specifically from the gut epithelium and showed that this local TNF overproduction causes full disease pathology in the mouse. These findings suggest a new mechanism for CD development in humans where gut epithelium overproducing TNF due to particular genetic and/or environmental conditions may be causal to disease induction and pathogenesis.
