Research Assistant position in Bioinformatics - Kollias lab (08-01-2013)

A position for a Research Assistant in Bioinformatics is available in the lab of Dr. George Kollias at BSRC Fleming. The successful candidate will be a member of a highly interactive research group that operates across immunology, molecular biology and animal modeling at a systems level. We are seeking a young, highly motivated Bioinformatics Analyst to perform next generation sequence data processing and analysis in a dynamic and exciting academic environment at the nexus of immunology, molecular biology and epigenetics. Work will be performed in a small group atmosphere (approx. 15 members from diverse disciplines) with several active collaborators, and in concert with a computational biologist postdoctoral fellow.

Responsibilities include:

Design, development and operation of computational pipelines for the analysis of next generation sequencing data. Work will include both large-scale projects and small custom jobs, and span a wide variety of analysis, inference and quality-control problems. The candidate is expected to undertake the development of data analysis workflows and supporting software and will have active involvement in all phases of study design and analysis.

Position Requirements:

Strong computational/programming skills, including thorough experience with the following:

- Good knowledge of Inferential/Descriptive Statistics

- Good knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl/Python

- Statistical programming languages such as R, Matlab/Octave

- Experience with Next Generation Sequencing Data Analysis/Gene expression Analysis is highly preferable .

- Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments

The ideal candidate should hold a post-graduate degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) preferably in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology or similarly in Informatics/Computer Science with a certain focus on biomedical applications. Expertise in big volume data analysis, statistical design and inference methods and familiarity with bioinformatics tools and resources are highly desirable qualities. Knowledge of molecular biology, genomics and genetics is to be considered a plus. Candidates should have good oral and written communication skills, in Greek and English, as well as excellent organisation and resource management skills. The position offers competitive remuneration and very good prospects for personal and professional growth.
