BSRC Fleming PhD Candidates, Alexandros Charonitakis and Engie Prifti , have been awarded “Best Poster” prizes at the 30th Meeting of the Hellenic Society of Neuroscience held in Athens on 24-26 of November 2023.

BSRC Fleming PhD Candidates, Alexandros Charonitakis (Skoulakis Lab) and Engie Prifti (Papanikolopoulou Lab), have been awarded poster awards at the 30th Meeting of the Hellenic Society of Neuroscience for the "A neuronal circuit approach to Dishabituation Mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster" and "Mical modulates Tau toxicity via cysteine oxidation in vivo" respectively.

In summary, Ms Prifti and Mr Charotinakis presented their work as follows

Mical modulates Tau toxicity via cysteine oxidation in vivo.

Tau accumulation is clearly linked to pathogenesis in Alzheimer's disease and other Tauopathies. However, processes leading to Tau fibrillization and reasons for its pathogenicity remain elusive. Our work provides mechanistic insights into the role of cysteine residues as redox-switches regulating the process of Tau self-assembly into inclusions in vivo, its function as a cytoskeletal protein and its effect on neuronal toxicity and dysfunction.

A neuronal circuit approach to Dishabituation Mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster.

In this project we propose a multifaceted approach to investigate the neural circuits and mechanisms driving habituation and dishabituation in Drosophila melanogaster, contributing to our understanding of behavioral plasticity and its implications in psychiatric disorders.
