Rheumatoid arthritis and Spondyloarthritis are accompanied by several comorbid pathologies in human patients, often involving heart, lung and intestinal pathologies. Using the TNF-driven model of murine arthritis, Fleming researchers recently revealed the co-occurrence of arthritis with valvular heart disease. [PubMed], [Editorial], [Correspondence].

Most notably, a common TNF-mediated and mesenchymal-cell driven mechanism was found to be causative of both pathologies. These findings introduce a novel understanding of causative mechanisms in comorbid diseases and lay the ground for future development of therapies commonly targeting such pathogenic pathways. ARD
