One Ph.D. opening for a Marie-Curie studentship and two postdoctoral felowships at the University of Louvain, Unit of Bioengineering. The topic for the Ph.D. thesis is the development and application of metagenomic tools for studying the degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater ecosystems. The topic for a 3-year postdoctoral position is the optimisation of the production of fungal laccases and their implementation in the elimination of micropollutants. Finally, the topic for a 2-year postdoctoral position, possibly renewable for another 2 years, is the optimisation of the lipid production by micro algae in photobioreactors.

The post includes establishment of an FLS Core Facility for mammalian genetics providing advice, guidance, and practical assistance in techniques associated with the production, breeding and analyses of mammalian model systems. The Leibniz Graduate School on Ageing and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) offers an international postgraduate (PhD) programme to students with excellent qualifications, available in spring / summer 2009. It is a joint programme between the Leibniz Institute for Age Research – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and the Friedrich - Schiller - University (FSU) in Jena. Participating research groups work on Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Cancer Biology, Neurobiology and Structural Biology to investigate the multifaceted mechanisms that cause the development of age-related diseases and those that cause senescence and ageing. The bioinformatics candidate should be familiar with MatLab or some command line interface for the analysis of large data sets. The laboratory will be working with Next Generation sequencing data sets and will require familiarity with existing algorithms as well as development of novel algorithms for these analyses. CAREER DEVELOPMENT POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS


Applications are invited for the above positions in one of the three research groups listed below. The positions are available from October 2007, but applicants wishing to start at any time up to April 2008 will be considered.

Simon Arthur. Role of MAP kinases in inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.

Tricia Cohen. Role of protein serine/threonine phosphatases in cancer.

Philip Cohen. Dissection of signaling pathways activated by infection and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The appointments will be made on the Medical Research Council’s Band 4 Scientist scale (£24,993-30,945 plus superannuation) with initial placement depending on achievements and experience.

The MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit is a major international centre for research on cell signaling. Its research funding is among the highest in Europe and its innovative collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry (The Division of Signal Transduction Therapy) won a Queen’s Anniversary Award in 2006.
