The Leibniz Graduate School on Ageing and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) offers an international postgraduate (PhD) programme to students with excellent qualifications, available in spring / summer 2009. It is a joint programme between the Leibniz Institute for Age Research – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and the Friedrich - Schiller - University (FSU) in Jena. Participating research groups work on Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Cancer Biology, Neurobiology and Structural Biology to investigate the multifaceted mechanisms that cause the development of age-related diseases and those that cause senescence and ageing. The NCSR 'Demokritos' of Greece and the NIH of the USA cooperate in a collaborative training program called NIH-NCSR 'D' Research Career Transition Award Program, aiming to establish a long-term career path for non-US research scientists of exceptional scientific ability, build long-term collaborations in sciences between the NIH and institutions of scientific excellence and higher learning abroad, ensure selection of the best non-US trainees to receive outstanding scientific mentorship at NIH and upon completion of their training at NIH, ensure support for the Fellows' return to their home country to pursue independent research careers and continued long-term scientific collaborations with their NIH mentors. The structure of this program consists of two phases, a 2-3 year postdoctoral/career development training at the NIH and a 2-3 year research of faculty position at a university in Greece. More Info

Three post-doctoral positions available in different research groups active at the research institute connected to Istituto Clinico Humanitas, in Milan. Research projects focus on the characterization of the role of PTX3 in innate immunity and inflammation (Barbara Bottazzi), the identification of inflammatory molecules and mechanisms promoting the phenotype of tumour-associated myelomonocytic cells (Antonio Sica), and the identification and functional role of microRNA regulated in macrophages during inflammatory reactions (Massimo Locati). The use of molecular and biochemical techniques as well as gene modified animals generated by the host laboratory is involved. Successful candidates must have excellent English communication skills, a documented background on immunology and master cell and molecular biology techniques; additional specific expertises may be required by distinct projects. Three positions are available for independent Principal Investigators (PI) at the Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) to conduct original and innovative research leading to a better understanding of the human immune system. Research projects will preferably aim at deciphering how various molecular or cellular elements of the immune system interact in physiological or pathological conditions. Faculty Positions and Career Development Fellowships available at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute for outstanding young scientists who have an interest in developing or using high throughput technologies to address important biological questions using model organisms, particularly the mouse and zebrafish. Postdoctoral position available at the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology, Department of Oncology, University Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the identification of negative immunoregulatory mechanisms associated with cancer and to supervise the monitoring of immune responses in cancer patients that participate in cancer vaccine trials. A close collaboration and exchange with researchers in the lab that focus on the discovery of new principles through mouse-based work may provide a potential for translating discoveries into the clinic by interacting with a clinical trial team in the Department of Oncology.
