OVERVIEW
Introduction
The Biomedical Sciences Research Center "Alexander Fleming" is a new institution
with a history closely linked to the Greek Foundation for Basic Biological Research
"Alexander Fleming". Amalia Fleming established the latter in 1965 with a donation
aiming at the promotion of Molecular Biology and Medical Research.
The Center is located at Vari, near Athens and is housed in a modern building
occupying about 6000 sq. m.
It started its operation under an interim administrative board in 1998.
It is supported in part by the Greek government and is under the supervision
of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology
of the Ministry of Development.
Presidents and Directors:
• 1997-2002: Professor John Volanakis
• 2002- today: Dr. George Kollias [Brief CV]
Objectives
The Alexander Fleming Research Center develops research programs at the cutting edge of modern biomedical sciences. Although the main orientation of the Center's programs is towards basic research, translational and/or applied research is also pursued by individual investigators.
Current research interests
BSRC "Alexander Fleming" is a governmental, non-profit research institution. The Center became operation in 1998 and grew on the competency of its people into a model research centre comprises of 5 research institutes, of which three are currently operational:
- The Institute of Immunology
- The Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics
- The Institute of Molecular Oncology
- The Institute of Microbiology-Virology
- The Institute of Cellular & Developmental Biology
The Center's main research areas include:
- Functional genetics and functional genomics
- Molecular and cellular immunology
- Animal models of human disease
- Transgenesis, targeted gene knockout and high throughout mutagenesis
- Transcriptional and post transcriptional mechanisms of gene regulation
- Stem Cell differentiation
