For a second time in the last five years both our Institute of Immunology and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics were evaluated as top of the list, "Excellent" research Institutes in Greece.
October 24, 2005: A recent review by an international committee
set up by the Greek Government to assess the status of all Greek Research
Institutes awarded both the Institute of Immunology and the Institute
of Molecular Biology and Genetics the status of “excellence in biomedical
research”. This is the second time in a row that both Institutes of the
Fleming Research Centre are recognised as ‘examples of successful investment in
a competitive field’. The two Institutes were awarded a similar status of
excellence in the round of evaluations performed in year 2000. The current
successful evaluation translates also into a grant award of an overall amount of
1.678.013 €.
Concerning maintenance and further development of Excellence in our Center, the
evaluation committee made the following recommendations to the Greek Government:
• We believe the Center should have 4-5 programs and sufficient critical mass to
remain internationally competitive.
• We propose that resources are immediately provided for recruitment, equipment
and expansion of new programs.
• The animal facility is large and competently supervised. This animal facility
can very well form a national core for recombinant mice and even be expanded
further
• We propose that the Biomedical Science Research Center ‘Alexander Fleming’ makes
detailed plans for expansion in existing facilities and even provide long term
goals all the way to establishing an International Center of Excellence.
